How to Clean Laminate Furniture
If your office utilizes laminate furniture, you know that laminate is a printed surface that’s made to look like real wood and is usually made of plastic bonded to a composite base. Because it is a man-made material that is scratch and stain-resistant, it is fairly easy to maintain—making cleaning it a breeze! Keep reading to find out how to best go about the task.
You should dust at a rate that correlates with how often you use your laminate furniture. If you use a piece every day, it has less opportunity to get dusty than a piece you rarely use. When you dust, use an oil-free furniture spray and make sure you don’t leave any excess behind.
When you need to clean your laminate furniture, but don’t need to dust or remove any stains, use a combination of liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water. Then, rinse the laminate with cold water and a paper towel or a lint-free microfiber cloth.
Difficult stains like grease can usually be removed using a mixture of liquid dish soap and warm water. Apply it to laminate with a soft bristle brush using a circular motion or in the direction of the grain (if grain is present). Make sure you don’t press too hard, and rinse the spot when you’re done.
What Not to Do
When cleaning laminate furniture, make sure you don’t:
- Use abrasive cloths or cleaners. These can scratch or discolor the laminate.
- Use bleach. This can cloud the finish of the laminate.
- Forget to rinse. Leaving soap or furniture spray on laminate can cause marring on the furniture or staining on anything or anyone who touches the spot affected.
- Use extremely hot water. Laminate can be stained by heat.
- Use too much water. Laminate can be warped by excessive amounts of water.
